The Touchstone School
Grafton, Massachusetts

The Touchstone Community School was founded as an alternative educational environment where students, staff, and parents jointly engage in the learning process. The building's L-shaped plan gives clear expression to this philosophy by creating short corridors whose intersection provides the perfect location for a community space. Each classroom has a long window wall, extensive storage for supplies, and direct access to the outdoors. Active staff input has ensured that building’s spaces support the diversity of needs and activities that constitute the school's daily life. And the building provides a rich and cohesive environment that sustains the values of the community.

Black River Architects subsequently designed an addition that included an additional classroom, library and project room.
