South Dartmouth, Massachusetts
The stone barn at Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Allen’s Pond Sanctuary is an unusual, and perhaps unique, stone structure for Massachusetts. Over the years it had been used as a horse barn, a storage shed and had been awkwardly retrofitted with a second floor apartment. While handsome and distinctive in appearance, the barn was deteriorating and in need of a new use if it was to serve a purpose and survive.
Funded by a Community Preser-vation Grant and in conjunction with the Dartmouth Historical Society, Mass Audubon and Black River Architects stabilized the foundations, walls and roof structure, rebuilt the roof, reused what was left of the original building fabric and con- verted the barn into program space for Mass Audubon Society and a meeting space for the town of Dartmouth.
