National Geographic Society
The store is designed as a "building within a building." Using cherry casework and a retail "storefront," an entirely new image was devel- oped to compliment that of the marble and travertine lobby. The store is divided into three rooms to create spatial complexity and to delineate merchandise categories. The first room displays signature products of the National Geographic Society; the second room, books, atlases and maps; the third room, videos and merchandise for children.
To express the Society's commit- ment to environmental concerns, the materials used in the casework were either recycled or renewable. The veneers are American cherry and the core is medium density fiberboard made from recycled wood waste. The fiber-board shelves were stained to eliminate the need for plastic laminate.
