Previous to our involvement on the project, the client had been adding on to his home and making interior renovations for over 10 years. His need to provide a separate suite of rooms for his aging parents, combined with a desire to leave the existing garden undisturbed, dictated we add an entire third floor to the house. The client also required that the design fit seamlessly with the existing vocabulary of forms and materials that he had previously employed.
The solution developed by Black River set the new third floor back from the walls below and linked the three floors with a vertical shaft of space that appears on the top floor as a contemporary turret. Interior spaces are detailed in a contemporary manner, employing light (from skylights, through glass block and bouncing off reflective surfaces) to animate the spaces.
