Yosemite Valley Visitors Center

Yosemite Valley Visitors Center
Yosemite National Park, California

The Valley Visitor Center, while structurally sound, had not been updated since it was built in the late 1950's. The main lobby had become overcrowded, producing a less than satisfactory visitor experience, disappointing retail sales and a first impression that detracted from the beauty of the park.

Working with a large multi-organization client, Black River Architects developed a new plan for the building that separated the information and retail functions, giving each the setting they require to properly address the needs of the visitors. A new, warmer palette of materials relieves the building’s existing dark wood, stone and concrete. All wood veneers and solid wood used in the casework are from sustainable-yield forests. The retail operation has benefited dramatically; sales, which support park programs, have increased by over 50%.
