United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
MarketPlace Associates, Black River Architects’ retail consultancy, began the project with a simple charge from the Museum: determine whether the Museum should have a store. Based on interviews with Holocaust professionals and our knowledge of similar museums and their stores, a visitor/customer profile was formulated and gross and net income projected.
Once the museum decided to proceed with the project, Black River Architects designed the store and the building improvements, including the mechanical and electrical systems and a major stair connecting the two floors. The store was conceived and designed as a resource and resting place for visitors. The design emphasized a subtle palette, an understated style and simple detailing.
